Aviawest-Rocky
Mountain TeenSpeed Junior Development Team Open to cyclists 12-19 years old
"I am pleased to be part of Team Aviawest and am proud to be part of an organization that supports young athletes who have their own dreams of one day winning gold", Simon Whitfield, Olympic Champion, Team Supporter, Mentor for youth.
Our goal is to help young riders get into the sport of cycling either to race, or just have fun on their bikes. But for those with high aspirations, our program can take you to the top.
The Aviawest-Rocky Mountain Teen Speed program is Victoria's only professionally coached cycling club exclusively for young riders! Our mandate is to provide a fun environment for athletes aged 1 2 -1 9 to learn how to ride their bikes better and participate in regular exercise activities, developing future bike racers and getting kids off the PlayStation and on their bikes! Aviawest-Rocky Mountain Teen Speed is Vancouver Island's only non-profit cycling club dedicated to providing the best coaching and support to young athletes at their introduction and as they pursue their cycling dreams.
Aviawest-Rocky Mountain Teen Speed trains under the guidance of one of Canada's top cycling coaches, Steve Lund, who has extensive experience coaching both developing athletes and champions such as Olympic Triathlon Gold Medalist, Simon Whitfield and US Pro Tour Cycling Champion Gina Grain. Steve graduated from the University of Victoria's National Coaching Institute in 1998, he is a Level 4 certified coach and NCCP Master Course Conductor with over 20 years experience in cycling.
For newer riders the Aviawest-Rocky Mountain Teen Speed Program offers the same proven program of professional coaching in Road, Track and Mountain Bike riding, racing and training that was so successful with the original TeenSpeed. All group training sessions are designed specifically to foster the physical, technical and tactical cycling development of athletes in this age group. Group training will be performed in age and ability specific groups to encourage and develop teamwork and group dynamics. Training sessions and rides lead by the coach will be the norm, rather than training on your own, as athletes at this level will gain the most with consistent one on one interaction with a coach and a group of their peers. All athletes will receive assistance in planning their race schedule to meet their goals and match their level of development. The long-term development of each athlete is of the utmost importance. Long term goals and involvement in sporting activities will always be stressed over short-term results.

Aviawest's TeenSpeed Cycling has a proven record of helping young athletes achieve their goals! Over the past 6 years, TeenSpeed Cycling has turned athletes with no race experience into winning racers, competing for Team Canada at both Mountain Bike and Road World Championships.

Testimonials
“I love riding with the TeenSpeed gang, it's a ton of fun and it's great to see how fast all the kids are getting!” Gina Grain, 2006 World Track Championships Silver Medalist, 5 time Canadian National Champion, Colavita Women's Pro Cycling Team, TeenSpeed Guest Coach

“Steve, as I do a little reflecting while preparing Kirsten to head off to World Championships, I can't help but think of what a profound effect you have had on her performance. People always used to say "wait until she learns to cycle", or "wait until she develops some strength to ride the bike" etc. Well ever since you set her up she has become so strong on the bike, that now everyone talks about how she is able to control a race with her strength on the bike. At the U.S. Nationals they had a 1.5 km hill "Alabama Hill" which was an awesome climb. The women started 2 minutes back of the men, by lap 2 Kirsten was already biking past men on the U.S. National team!!
I just wanted to ensure you were aware of the difference you have made, and thank you so much for your expertise!!!!”
Rob Sweetland, father of 2006 Triathlon Junior World Champion Kirsten Sweetland
